It’s evacuation day. I am up early and go for coffee with Daddy. I need to make sure he has remembered to pack everything he might need. Once I am satisfied he has all of the meds, clothes, and toiletries he will need, I load everything into his truck.

I drain my tanks and fill my fresh water tank, pull in my slides, and disconnect everything. I grab my purse, load Emmi and her bed into the truck, and call Daddy, telling him we will be on our way in five minutes and to be ready to pull out behind us. Using my pink duct tape guides, I hook up to the truck on the first try. We are headed west on I-10 towards Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park for another adventure.

I call Rex to let him know we were on our way. He had already picked up his golf cart rental that we would share and toured the park. He loves it. He told me the spots I had reserved were really steep. He wasn’t even sure my fifth wheel would fit between the trees. He had found better spots and would be waiting for us when we arrived. I feel like I am surrounded by angels.

People started evacuating from the Keys and South Florida earlier in the week. Hotels and campgrounds were booked all the way past Atlanta. Traffic is slow, but not as bad as I expected it would be. The slowest places are near rest areas. People are lined up to get off. As I pass the rest areas, I notice they are overflowing with people who are running for their lives. Many are sleeping on the ground.

I pull into the park and ease through the Live Oak trees with their moss swaying in the breeze, and the same magic as always happens. I feel like I am in another world. One where worries disappear and life is lighter.

I stop at the office to get checked in and pick up the keys to Daddy’s cabin before we are escorted to my site on River Road. With Rex and my escort guiding me, backing into my spot is easy. But life can’t always be completely easy. I cannot get the fifth wheel to release from the truck hitch. I try dropping the jacks a little, but it still won’t come off of the truck. I can see the pin that is stuck. I break out the hammer. One tap and it’s released, but the pin is rusted and breaks. Not good. I cannot pull the trailer without all of the pins in place. It’s too dangerous. Rex comes up with a temporary solution that I pray holds.

I take Daddy to his cabin and get him settled before setting up camp down the road. With Rex’s help, it’s just like home in no time.

Now to go pick up Daddy’s golf cart and get some lunch at the café. It’s a clear, sunny day, so we sit outside at a table with an umbrella shading it.
